Women’s Morning Study – Crazy Love, Week 1

Let me start by saying that I have had the pleasure of attending both the morning and evening women’s bible study groups and I have been impressed by the women in our church.  Our women have a hunger for God’s word and for a deeper relationship with Him and with each other.

Today, the morning study group (meeting at the home of Michel Lynch) started its new study “Crazy Love” by Francis Chan, the pastor of Cornerstone Church in Simi Valley, California.  We began our study by reading the first chapter together as a group and watching the corresponding video.  Francis Chan drives home the point of just how HUGE and amazing our universe is.  He illustrates the enormity of Gods creation, such as 350,000,000,000 galaxies, 3,000 species of trees in a square mile of Amazon jungle, and God’s knack for detail, such as Elm trees averaging six million leaves per tree and a caterpillar having 228 separate and distinct muscles in its head.  He continues his listing of amazing facts that we take for granted until you arrive to the mindset he intended for you to have, awe for God’s creation and awe for our Creator.

Now that we are meditating on our awesome creator, Francis asks us to consider our prayer life.  Do we pray the same tired prayer on autopilot or are we conversing with our God?  He challenges us to invision our God as we pray to Him and depicts two descriptions of God to us.  The first is in Revelation 4.  John describes God as best as he can, the One seated on the throne as two gems, “jaspar and carnelian”, the area around the throne as a rainbow that look like an emerald.  Rather than a God of flesh and bones, He is described as a God resembling radiant jewels.  There is more, but I will move on.  Isaiah’s vision (in chapter 6) is of God on the throne, the bottom of His robe filling the temple and Seraphim above, crying out Holy, Holy, Holy.

So as we consider these concepts this week, we are challenged to examine our communication with God, a Holy, awesome Creator who loves us, sinning man.
